It’s always perplexing to me to hear how often credit unions seem unsure of which markets to serve next, as if the fintechs and big banks have gobbled up all the loaves of bread on the shelves and there aren’t even an crumbs to be found. 

During Mitchell Stankovic’s recent “Underground Collision: CUSO Mayhem” event in Las Vegas, there were a collisions—and even more frustration but no actual mayhem---around the whole issue of vendor contracts. 

My credit union, Tongass Federal Credit Union in Ketchikan, Alaska, recently completed a merger with another regional credit union in Southeast Alaska.

In a news conference following the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, President Kennedy  remarked, “Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan.”

Credit unions are rightly proud of the “army of cooperators”—as they are sometimes called by the zealous—and the “advocates”—as they are more often referred to by the trade associations—who will be descending this week on Washington as part of the CUNA’s GAC.
