SAN RAFAEL, Calif.—U.S. consumer confidence has improved to a point not seen in the last six years, according to the Money Anxiety Index. The consumer confidence metric dipped to 69.2, below the 50-year average of 70.7, signaling improving financial confidence according to Dan Geller, chief research officer of the index.

 

DALLAS—A new report on second quarter economic data suggests that although the forecasts for economic growth and unemployment have improved, questions regarding to what extent consumer spending will contribute to GDP growth remain. “Moreover, concerns remain on whether or not the employment profile of the economy will improve enough so as to instill enough confidence to entice more consumers to open their wallets,” said Brian Turner, executive director with Meridian Alliance.

LAKE FOREST, Ill.—Walmart’s GoBank account is a serious threat to credit unions, say several analysts, including one who is predicting that of the three-million accounts Walmart will add within a year, an astonishing two-million will come from CUs if changes aren’t made.

LONDON, England—London Capital CU here is reporting a 47% increase in membership this year through September, along with a 62% increase in loans to £5.6 million, and a 59% increase in savings.  The credit union now serves more than 10,000 people. Like many CUs in the U.K. it is positioned as a primary alternative to payday lenders. LCCU’s CEO, Martin Groombridge, told 24Dash.com that it estimates that members have saved £6.5m in interest, charges and fees by switching loans to the credit union. 

 

IRVINE, Calif.—Home prices nationwide, including distressed sales, increased 6.4% in August 2014 compared to August 2013, which represents 30 months of consecutive year-over-year increases in home prices nationally, according to CoreLogic’s Home Price Index.
