ARLINGTON, Va.—Credit union member growth declined 2.9% in August year over year, and share growth was down 3.4% year over year, according to new analysis released by NAFCU as part of its Economic and CU Monitor.

SANTA ROSE, Calif.—Redwood CU has completed its 2014 United Way workplace giving campaign, with total contributions of $98,175, exceeding this year’s campaign goal of $98,000. The credit union raised $96,000 for United Way last year. RCU offered several unique incentives to encourage employees to contribute: prize raffles, casual days, smoothie parties and more. In addition to supporting with monetary contributions, RCU employees recently volunteered in United Way’s Day of Caring. Volunteers this year focused on two projects in Santa Rosa, helping to refurbish a bicycle shed for the North Bay Children’s Center and packing meals for the Council on Aging.

PLANO, Texas—A group of economists meeting here as part of Catalyst Corporate FCU’s Economic Forum here said they see no indications the U.S. economy is in danger of returning to recessionary conditions. Addressing more than 300 credit union executives, the economists further forecast an ongoing, gradual, upward climb. Among those economists was Steven Rick, chief economist with CUNA Mutual Group, noted the latest unemployment figure of 5.9% means the U.S. is getting close to the long-run target of 5%.  “Anything below that will create pressure on wage,” he said, adding that the U.S. continues to see more more high quality jobs. In 2014, 75 percent of jobs added were considered “high quality,” versus just 50% in 2013.

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.--Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU) continues to draw dozens of small businesses and hundreds of Long Island shoppers to its second Artisanal Farmers Market. The TFCU Artisanal Farmers Market is held every Thursday, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the credit union’s headquarters located at 102 Motor Parkway in Hauppauge, until October 30.

There’s no doubt the under-34 crowd is leading the charge toward mobile banking. Yet older consumers are increasingly turning to their smartphones and tablets to meet their banking needs, representing a big opportunity for credit unions. While older consumers still account for a smaller chunk of the market — approximately 27% of those who perform mobile banking transactions, according to a 2012 online survey of nearly 3,000 individuals conducted by the Consumer Research Section of the Fed — the percentage of older individuals swapping branch activities for mobile banking is only getting bigger, multiple studies reveal.
