VANCOUVER, Wash.— iQ Credit Union has agreed to provide more than $1 million in cash, debt forgiveness and fee-practice changes to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging it improperly charged certain overdraft and non-sufficient funds (NSF) fees, according to settlement documents and Claim Depot.

ARLINGTON, Va.—Members of $17-million Healthcare Employees Mid-Atlantic (HEMA) FCU have approved a merger into PAHO/WHO Federal Credit Union, paving the way for the combined institution to begin operating Sept. 1 under the new name Bienestar Federal Credit Union.

But while much of the conversation has centered on chatbots, fraud detection and member-facing applications, one Massachusetts credit union has quietly found value in a far less glamorous corner of the business: the back office.

TROY, Mich.— Americans remain under significant financial strain despite modest improvement in their overall financial health, with two-thirds still considered financially unhealthy and more than three-quarters continuing to cut spending to cope with higher costs, according to new research from JD Power. The firm's June Banking and Payments Intelligence Report found 34% of consumers are now considered financially healthy—the highest share since November 2025—but 66% remain financially vulnerable, overextended or stressed.

 

LOS ANGELES—A member of the South Los Angeles-based Crips street gang has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for his role in a $2.8-million bank fraud scheme that used stolen and altered checks, along with social media, to recruit accomplices and drain bank accounts before financial institutions could detect the fraud, the Department of Justice reported.
