Some Post-Election Lessons from Lyrics

By Michael Fryzel

On Friday, Nov. 11, we celebrated Veteran’s Day. It is a solemn celebration as we remember all those who gave their lives for our country as well as pay tribute to the men and women who have worn the uniform of the armed forces. Ceremonies were held across the country where the sacrifices made by our veterans were remembered. There were prayers and patriotic songs. The events are moving and thought provoking.

At one of the televised ceremonies a gentleman by the name of Lee Greenwood performed a song he recorded a number of years ago titled Proud to Be an American.

Listening to the words of that song leads one to stop and think that because of the sacrifices of so many individuals we are able to live in the greatest country in the world. He begins by reminding us of our flag and freedom:

I’d thank my lucky stars,

To be livin here today.

‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom,

And they can’t take that away.

Following there is the tribute to all who died:

And I’m proud to be an American,

Where at least I know I’m free.

And I won’t forget those who died,

Who gave that right to me.

He then reminds us that regardless of where we live in this country, we are all in this together.  And having just gone through a very contentious campaign and election, whether your candidate won or not, the words have true meaning for us all as we are still one nation better than any other.

From the lake of Minnesota,

To the hills of Tennessee.

Across the plains of Texas,

From sea to shining sea.

From Detroit to Houston’

And New York to L.A.

Well there’s pride in every American heart,

And it’s time we stand and say.

That I’m proud to be an American.

Despite the differences that still exist among the electorate, everyone needs to remember that only by working together will we accomplish all that we need to do to remain the great nation we are.

The election is over but our work is not. And Mr. Greenwood concludes by saying that greatness can only be achieved by standing together. What greater tribute can we give to our brave men and women who stood together for us?

And I gladly stand up,

Next to you and defend her still today.

‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,

God bless the USA.
