United Health CU Provides Teacher Grants

BURLINGAME, Calif. – United Health Credit Union has announced a total of $1,000 in teacher grants to fund classroom supplies at Burlingame High School. The local grant recipients, Philip Noyes and Michelle Riley, will each receive $500 to make their classrooms come to life for their students.

Noyes, a ceramic and game design instructor at BHS, will use the grant to purchase a Sense 3D Scanner from 3D Systems. The handheld scanner will allow his students to bring physical objects into three dimensions for gaming applications. Sense scans may also be paired with the school’s 3D printer used by students in the Architectural Design and Exploring Technology programs.

Riley, a social science teacher, is responsible for the yearbook curriculum at BHS. She plans to use the grant money to purchase a Microsoft Surface Pro 4, which will allow her to draw comments on design layout and grade projects without having to lug around a huge portfolio. With a touch screen that will allow her to check off rubrics and provide more timely feedback, students will have more opportunities to engage in skill development.

Linda White, CEO of United Health Credit Union, says she is amazed how teachers across various disciplines are finding ways to incorporate science, technology, engineering and math into the classroom.

“These proactive teachers are bringing new ideas on how to bring innovative, hands-on experiences to their students,” she said. “It is our pleasure to support these projects that will ultimately lead to a better learning environment.”
