Town & Country Supports Meals on Wheels

SCARBOROUGH, Maine–Town & Country FCU made a significant contribution to Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program, which serves Cumberland and York Counties.  The timing of the contribution coincides with May’s designation as National Older Americans Month.

At the event, the credit union presented a check for $2,800, representing the approximately 2,800 Meals on Wheels recipients the program serves in Cumberland and York counties.

Laurence Gross, CEO of Southern Maine Agency on Aging, said the “contribution will not only help us serve our existing clients but, hopefully, allow others to get off the waiting list.  Food insecurity among older Mainers is a serious issue that we see every day.  We received multiple calls just today from people looking to access Meals on Wheels, but keeping up with demand is an ongoing challenge.  We appreciate the credit union’s recognition of this issue in conjunction with Older Americans Month.”

Added Jon Paradise, VP- Communications and Public Relations with Town & Country, “Maine is the oldest state in the nation, so the issue of hunger among older adults is significant.  In fact, the state ranks first in New England in food insecurity for people aged 60 and older.  On the occasion of National Older Americans Month, we wanted to take this opportunity to not only make a financial contribution to support efforts to help, but to also raise awareness about this significant problem in Maine and spotlight the need to help.  Town & Country is committed to not only providing financial services to our communities but to the health and welfare of our communities.  We are grateful to the services that the Southern Maine Agency on Aging provides, and are proud to support the effort to make sure the older members of our community have enough to eat.”

The Meals on Wheels program delivers up to five meals a week to each of the 2,800 participants in the program throughout Cumberland York counties.
