LAUREL, Md.– Tower FCU’s TowerCares Foundation has named 10 winners in its 2021-22 College Scholarship Program.
This year, the Foundation increased the number of scholarships awarded from five to ten $5,000 scholarships. Since 2018, TowerCares has awarded $125,000 in college scholarships to 25 students pursuing careers in STEM-related fields.
When Brooke Nixon of Finksburg, Md., found out that she was one of the winners in the 2021-22 TowerCares Foundation College Scholarship Program, she was elated and thankful.
“Thank you does not begin to cover my gratitude for this scholarship,” she said.
Nixon will be a senior at Christopher Newport University this fall and is studying Information Science and Psychology.
The credit union said the scholarship winners were selected from an impressive pool of over 200 applicants by an independent judging organization. Judging was based on academic record/achievements, awards/honors received; community involvement, including volunteerism and extracurricular activities; and the content of two required essay responses.
“I am so impressed by all of our scholarship winners and how much they have all achieved at such a young age,” said Richard Stafford, president of the TowerCares Foundation. “College can be very expensive for students and their families, and we are pleased to relieve some of the financial burden of the cost of higher education for these exceptional students.”
