LOS ANGELES – Twenty-three teachers from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) were honored as Rookies of the Year for the 2014-15 school year by California Credit Union in a Rookie of the Year celebration at Dodger Stadium. The Rookie of the Year program was created and underwritten by California Credit Union in conjunction with Security Benefit, a retirement specialist serving the credit union's members. The program recognized educators in the nation's second largest school district.
This was the inaugural year for the program. Out of more than 920 first-year teachers employed for the 2014-2015 school year, 87 first year teachers were nominated as Rookies of the Year. Winners were selected by a committee.
All 23 teachers and their guests enjoyed the Dodgers-Angels game from a private suite, and each honoree received an award. The Rookies of the Year represent 16 elementary schools, one middle school, four high schools, one magnet school, and one college preparatory school.
According to California CU, key characteristics for the Rookie of the Year winners were high levels of effectiveness in preparing and delivering instruction, providing a positive classroom climate with strong routines and procedures, a dynamic and engaging teaching style, and high levels of professionalism.
"These teachers exemplify excellence in what they do," said Ron McDaniel, CEO of California Credit Union. "Our credit union was built on serving educators and we are proud to support a program that encourages and inspires excellent new teachers who are passionate about teaching the children of Los Angeles."
