Sen. Franken Visits With Firefly Branch at High School

BURNSVILLE, Minn.–Minnesota Senator Al Franken (D) recently visited Burnsville High School (BHS) to learn about the school’s Pathways program and  partnerships that have been created with businesses in the community,  including Firefly Credit Union.

The senator participated in a roundtable dialogue on Pathways, including its Business, Management & Entrepreneurship Career Field, into which the credit union’s partnership falls. Firefly’s portion of the dialogue included speakers from Firefly Credit Union and BHS.

Marty Kelly, SVP/Chief Marketing Officer at Firefly Credit Union, and DECA Advisor Michele Carroll described to the senator the roles of Firefly Credit Union and BHS in their growing partnership, including its newest learning opportunity – an in-school branch. But the real star of Firefly’s presentation was Zach McGovern, a BHS senior who was involved in the collaboration early on, the credit union said.

“I have learned a lot about finance and marketing from my involvement with Firefly through the Pathways and DECA programs,” said McGovern. “There aren’t many high school students who can say they have played an integral role in planning and implementing a credit union branch and new product development.”

The BHS senior also detailed his experience working in the in-school branch and training in fellow students. McGovern previously worked at the credit union’s Burnsville branch location and has volunteered at multiple Firefly community events.
