RALEIGH, N.C.–A new supportive housing project under development in Wilmington will soon open for area seniors, veterans and persons with disabilities – SECU Lakeside Reserve. A ceremonial groundbreaking held today at the project’s four-acre site officially kicked off the construction of a 16-unit apartment building, the first of a two phase project. State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) members, via the SECU Foundation, provided Good Shepherd Center with a $1-million grant to help fund the phase one construction. The grant also boosts the Center’s capital campaign efforts for an additional 24-unit facility. Representatives from SECU Foundation and the credit union joined community leaders and supporters for the morning celebration, where SECU Foundation Board Chair Jim Johnson presented a check to Good Shepherd Center on behalf of Credit Union members
“We are happy to provide funding to help support Good Shepherd’s mission to combat homelessness by providing permanent supportive housing for seniors, veterans and persons with disabilities,” said Johnson. “SECU members understand the significance of this project and the positive impact it will have on these underserved populations. Good Shepherd has an excellent reputation with over 32 years of experience providing services to Wilmington’s homeless citizens and we are proud to aid their efforts.”
