LONGVIEW, Wash.–Red Canoe Credit Union has awarded $35,000 in college scholarships to high school students and adults wishing to further their education this fall. Red Canoe’s scholarship program was created in the memory of Wally C. Ohlfs, the founding manager of Red Canoe Credit Union.
After founding the credit union while working for Weyerhaeuser Company, Ohlfs served as the credit union manager/President from its inception in 1937 until 1975 and was a tireless advocate for the credit union industry, the credit union said.
The Wally Ohlfs Scholarship Program is available to graduating High School seniors who have maintained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher and will be enrolling full-time in an accredited college or university. This year’s recipients were: $3,000 recipient, Shannon Stein of Kelso, Wash.; $2,000 recipients: Kasey Norton of Kelso, Wash.; Brooke Richter, Olivia Trekas, and Parker Doolin of Longview, WA; Sydney Hansen of Cathlamet, WA; Sarah Litzenberger of Eatonville, WA; Kemi Akinlosotu of Federal Way, WA; Olivia Shulke of Castle Rock, WA; and Ross Brooker of Olympia, WA. $1,500 recipients: Taylor Toftemark of Longview, WA; Colton Titus of Castle Rock, WA; Julia Browning of Collierville, TN; and, Shelby Robinson of Cathlamet, WA. $1,000 recipients: Adalyn Allen of Longview, WA; Ashley Ford of Collierville, TN; Brooke Taylor of Milton, WA; and Natalie Raflowski of Federal Way, Wash.
In addition to the Wally Ohlfs scholarships, Red Canoe also offers $1,000 in continuing education and nontraditional scholarships. This year’s winners were Alison Brennan who will be attending Georgetown University, Kaylee Hatfield attending George Fox, Hannah Enyeart attending Grand Canyon University and Fawn Harris attending Washington State University Vancouver.
