WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –Purdue Federal Credit Union is the lead sponsor or Purdue University’s 150thAnniversary celebration, which will culminate during Purdue’s Homecoming weekend in October. The university’s anniversary also coincides with the 50thanniversary of the credit union.
Purdue Federal was chartered on Feb. 25, 1969 and founded by Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus by a group of Purdue employees searching for a place where they, their families and their fellow employees could save and borrow money safely, confidentially and at a fair rate of interest. Today, Purdue Federal serves the faculty and staff, students and communities where Purdue University and its regional campuses operate.
Purdue University was chartered on May 6, 1869, when Gov. Conrad Baker signed a bill creating the university. It was founded after a Lafayette businessman named John Purdue donated land and money to start a college of science, technology and agriculture.
The $1.2-billion credit union has approximately 79,000 members.
