ALBANY, N.Y.–Credit unions in New York State awarded 56 college-bound students with $27,500 in scholarships as part of the New York Credit Union Association's statewide scholarship program. The students are members of 26 New York credit unions. Nearly 1,700 students from 95 credit unions applied for the scholarships, which ranged from $250-$1,500. According to the NYCUA, nine NYCUA chapters also pooled resources and participated in the program, which is open to New York credit union members who are high school seniors planning to enroll in a two- or four-year college.
Award recipients were selected based on academic performance, honors and awards, extracurricular activities, community activities, leadership roles and an essay.
"The New York credit union movement is proud to help our members and their families as they make one of the biggest and most important financial decisions of their lives: the decision to obtain a college degree," said NYCUA President and CEO William J. Mellin.
In addition to the scholarships awarded through the NYCUA's statewide program, New York credit unions awarded more than $3.3 million in total scholarships to college-bound members in 2014.
