CORVALLIS, Ore.–Oregon State Credit Union provided four free shred days in the communities of Corvallis, North Albany and Keizer serving more than 1,400 vehicles and shredding more than 28 tons pounds of sensitive materials for safe and secure disposal.
Working through their vendor agreement with Access Northwest and partnering with local law enforcement in all three cities, Oregon State Credit Union said it annually schedules these Saturday events protecting the public from fraud and identity theft as well as providing a significant benefit to the environment.
The collective shredding and recycling of 56,500 pounds of paperwork and other documentation saved more than 481 trees, 197,890 gallons of water, 140 cubic yards of landfill and nearly 116,000 kilowatts of energy. It also prevented 1,696 pounds of pollutants from entering the atmosphere. The estimated value of those sustainability efforts total more than $145,000, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
This year, the credit union added a food share donation opportunity to the last two events in Keizer and Corvallis. The Marion-Polk Food Share benefitted with 447 pounds of non-perishable items donated in Keizer. The Corvallis event gathered 437 pounds of foods and another $606 in donations toward Linn-Benton Food Share. The credit union matched $250 of the dollar total.
“These annual events have been very well received and provide numerous benefits to the community. Shredding and now the food share partnerships are just another way for us to live by two of our values of social responsibility and cooperative spirit,” said Oregon State Credit Union President and CEO Richard Hein.
