Los Angeles Federal Awards Scholarships

GLENDALE, Calif.–– Recipients of the Los Angeles Federal Credit Union (LAFCU) 2017 Jack C. Mathews College Scholarship competition were honored at a special evening reception here. Held at the credit union’s Glendale branch, $9,000 in scholarship grants were awarded to high school and college students pursuing higher education in the fall of 2017.

Checks of $1,000 were distributed by John Dea, LAFCU’s President/CEO, to each of the nine winners. Parents and relatives of the winners, close friends, and LAFCU managers and staff attended the reception. The festive event featured hors d’oeuvres, a selection of cheeses, desserts, cold beverages and a video corner where staff filmed the winners for future social media posts.

Applicants were evaluated on their academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, community service, and an essay on the following topic: “Explain five reasons why millennials (age 18 to 30) should choose credit unions over banks? What additional things can credit unions do to win the millennial market?” Selected from 44 entries, the winners will be attending Brown University, Creighton University, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Northridge, Rocky Mountain College, U.C. Davis, U.C. Irvine, and USC.
