Los Angeles FCU Awards Scholarships

GLENDALE, Calif.–– Recipients of the Los Angeles Federal Credit Union (LAFCU) 2018 Jack C. Mathews College Scholarship competition were honored at a recent special gathering held at the credit union’s Glendale branch.

Some $10,000 in scholarship grants were awarded to high school and college students pursuing higher education in the fall of 2018 and for the first time, the competition was also opened to teachers.  Checks were handed out to the winning students and teachers by LAFCU’s President/CEO, Richard Lie. A video corner where staff filmed the winners for future social media posts was also arranged.

Applicants were evaluated on their academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, community service, and an essay on the following topic: Explain five reasons why millennials (age 18 to 30) should choose credit unions over banks? What additional things can credit unions do to appeal to millennials?”

In addition, teachers were asked what they would do with their grant money if named a winner. Nearly 60 entries were received this year and the scope and quality of the submissions was impressive.

Established by LAFCU’s charity, LACA, the scholarship program was designed to help young members pay for their education and achieve their goals. It is named in honor of the late Jack C. Mathews, a former active and longstanding LAFCU board member.
