League of Southeastern CUs Honors Two Representatives

BIRMINGHAM, AL/TALLAHASSEE, FL —The League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates (LSCU) honored Reps. Mo Brooks (R-AL) and Bill Posey (R-FL) as its 2015 Federal Lawmakers of the Year. Both representatives were presented the award during visits to their offices as part of CUNA’s GAC.

“Reps. Brooks and Posey have shown that they are willing to remove regulatory barriers for credit unions,” said LSCU & Affiliates President/CEO Patrick La Pine. “They understand that these regulatory barriers are causing credit unions to focus more on compliance and less time on helping their membership. We thank Rep. Brooks and Posey for being willing to stand up for their local financial institutions.”

According to the LSCU, Rep. Posey, the 2012 LSCU Lawmaker of the Year, has been a friend to credit unions since his tenure in the Florida House and Senate. He has co-sponsored a number of credit union bills including HR 2769, the RBC Stop and Study Act, HR 989, Supplemental Capital, HR 1188, raising the MBL Cap, and HR 1133, an exemption for loans made to veterans from the MBL cap. “Rep. Posey can always be counted on to understand the issue and to work to help credit unions serve their membership,” the LSCU said.

Rep. Brooks has also co-sponsored a number of credit union legislation including HR 601, Privacy Notification Change, HR 685, the Mortgage Choice Act, and HR 2769, the Risk Based Capital Stop and Study Act. Rep. Brooks and Posey also signed on to the Risk Based Capital “Dear Colleague Letter” addressed to the NCUA asking that they revisit the proposal and have a second comment period before issuing a final rule.

The LSCU presents federal and state Lawmaker of the Year awards each year to show support for legislators that listen to the issues, co-sponsor legislation and vote in support of credit union position.
