GLENDALE, Calif.–Recipients of the Los Angeles Federal Credit Union (LAFCU) 2019 Jack C. Mathews College Scholarship competition were honored at a recent special gathering at the credit union’s Glendale branch. In total, $14,000 in scholarship grants were awarded to high school and college students pursuing higher education in the fall of 2019; teacher winners were recognized for their contributions as educators and advocates for students.
Checks were presented by LAFCU’s President/CEO Richard Lie.
Applicants were evaluated on their academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, community service, and an essay on the following topic: “As a millennial (between the ages of 18 to 30), how will your approach to money management and finances differ from your parents and past generations? What would you differently and what would you do the same?”
Teachers were asked how they would use their grant money and in what ways would they promote financial literacy to their students. This year LAFCU received over 95 scholarship entries, a record-breaking amount, and the scope and quality of the submissions was impressive.
Established by LAFCU, the scholarship program was designed to help young members pay for their education and achieve their goals. It is named in honor of the late Jack C. Mathews, a former active and longstanding LAFCU board member.
