LAFCU Announces Scholarship Winners

GLENDALE, Calif.–Local college-bound recipients of the Los Angeles Federal Credit Union (LAFCU) 2016 Jack C. Mathews College Scholarship competition were named at a special reception in their honor. The nine winners, who are headed to a university in the fall, were each awarded $1,000 by John Dea, LAFCU’s President/CEO at the credit union’s Glendale branch. The event featured hors d’oeuvres, desserts, cold beverages and a video corner where staff filmed recipients for future social media posts.  Parents or grandparents of the winners, close friends, members of the scholarship committee, and LAFCU managers and staff were all in attendance at the reception.

Selected from nearly 40 applicants, winners will be attending California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; California State University, Fullerton; Hampton University in Virginia; Rocky Mountain College in Montana; San Diego State University; University of Nevada, Reno; University of California, Riverside; University of Wisconsin, Madison; and Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Applicants were evaluated on their academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, community service, and an essay or self-made 15 or 30-second video on the topic “Why is LAFCU More LA Than Your Bank?” The question is a promotional tagline currently used by the credit union that focuses on the advantages of banking with LAFCU versus banks. A total of 33 essays and 6 videos were submitted to the credit union, and this was the first year applicants could submit a video instead of an essay.

Established by LAFCU’s charity, LACA, the scholarship program is designed to help young members pay for their education and achieve their goals. It is named in honor of the late Jack C. Mathews, a former active and longstanding LAFCU Board member.
