INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana League President John McKenzie was a guest on Community Link, a Sunday morning television program on Indianapolis’ CBS affiliate hosted by Carolene Mays-Medley and Marco Dominguez, who is also director of Community Outreach at Financial Center First CU. The program features organizations and businesses making a positive impact in the community.
“Credit unions provide all the consumer financial services anybody could want,” said McKenzie. “Many of them also offer business lending and business services. The primary difference is in the structure and the purpose of the credit union. Credit unions are member-owned, not-for-profit cooperatives, so there isn’t a group of stockholders that exists where the organization has to generate profits in order to pay dividends to those stockholders.”
McKenzie also pointed out that besides the financial value, members experience a service value, saying that credit unions emphasize service in a way that the for-profits cannot always do.
The league noted McKenzie further emphasized that excess earnings at credit unions are returned to members through better rates and lower fees. He said that Indiana’s 2.6 million credit union members benefit by about $166 million annually because they can go to a credit union rather than a for-profit financial service provider, adding up to about $133 per credit union household per year. About 35% of the state’s population are credit union members.
McKenzie explained the importance of having credit unions in the marketplace by saying that , “Any consumer or business owner knows that there is a locally rooted, member-owned, cooperative financial services provider available.”
