Jax FCU Names Scholarship Winner

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jax Federal Credit Union has named Dedrick Canady as its 2020 scholarship recipient.

Canady, a 2016 graduate of West Nassau High School, attends the University of Central Florida. He has been a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars since 2018 and is a current athlete on the UCF Golden Knights football team. The $1,000 scholarship will support his continued work toward earning a bachelor’s degree in finance.

Applicants to this year’s scholarship competition were asked to submit an essay on topics such as a financial lesson that you have learned from, how credit unions can better serve a younger audience and the importance of saving.

“I believe that there should be a mandatory basic financial literacy class with an emphasis on credit cards in high school and an even more advanced class of that nature in college with an emphasis on budgeting,” said Canady.

Since 2004, Jax Federal Credit Union has awarded more than $16,000 in scholarships to its members.

“Here at Jax Federal Credit Union, we agree with Dedrick’s wise perspective on the importance of financial literacy, credit and budgeting. It is wonderful to support the academic goals of this outstanding young adult, who understands what it means to take charge of his finances at a young age. We hope he continues to impact our community by assisting others with his interest in finance,” said Mary Svoboda, interim President and CEO of Jax Federal Credit Union.
