JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —Jax FCU has selected Whitney Lewis as the winner of its annual $1,000 scholarship contest.
Lewis graduated from the Paxon School for Advanced Studies in 2018, and is a rising senior majoring in Environmental Science at Florida State University this fall. She has served on the National Council of Negro Women since 2019, where she currently serves as the first vice president.
She has been a loyal member of Jax Federal Credit Union since 2007 and joined when she was just seven years old.
“We here at Jax Federal Credit Union value the importance of education and are proud to have Whitney as part of our member family. She demonstrates ambition to succeed in her field, and I am confident she has a bright future ahead of her. She shows promise for the next generation of leaders. We are happy to help her as she continues her education,” said John Servos, CEO and President of Jax Federal Credit Union.
Lewis’s winning essay highlighted her understanding of the importance of financial literacy and the role that credit unions like JAXFCU play in educating younger generations. She wrote about how credit unions can teach children and young adults about growing their savings safely, avoiding scams and the proper way to use credit and debit cards. She went on to explain why financial literacy is essential for young adults as they learn how to navigate ways to make and save money.
“If more students learned about savings accounts, they would invest their money more into credit unions,” she wrote. “Furthermore, credit unions are doing a good job with providing services to their younger audience and can continue by doing so through education.”
