“We’re excited to help students ease the financial burden associated with higher education,” Hughes Business Development Representative Irlanda Cuevas said. “For the last 16 years, it has been our honor to make a positive difference in the lives of deserving young students.”
Students were required to submit an essay or video answering the question, “What is the most important financial lesson you have learned in the past year and how has it impacted your plans for the future?” The winners were selected by a panel of 11 judges who scored the students’ submissions.
The scholarship program was open to all high school seniors who were members of the credit union.
Since 2005, Hughes has granted $100,000 in scholarships to high school graduates entering college or trade school.
In addition to its scholarship program, Hughes said it actively supports youth financial literacy through its educational partnerships with local school districts and community associations including the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona, Take Charge Cats, and Earn to Learn.
