Hanscom FCU Employee Raises Funds Via Boston Marathon

HANSCOM AFB, Mass.– Lorie Skelton, a member advisor with Hanscom Federal Credit Union, was selected as one of the three charity runners for #TeamHanscomFCU in this year’s Boston Marathon.  For the last 20 years, Hanscom FCU has raised money for the research and cure of pediatric neurological diseases such as Moyamoya Disease, Sturge-Weber Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and pediatric brain tumors at Boston Children’s Hospital through its association with Credit Unions Kids at Heart, one of the largest credit union collaborative fundraising programs in the U.S.

Each marathon season, the credit union sponsors three of its employees and volunteers as charity runners on #TeamHanscomFCU and sets aggressive fundraising goals to be achieved through donations and pre-race events. One hundred percent of the money raised goes to the hospital, with nothing taken out for administrative expenses, the credit union said.

“I’ve always wanted to run the Marathon,” said Skelton ahead of the race. “Ever since I knew we that had runners running for Boston Children’s Hospital, I wanted to be part of the team.”

In 2019, she ran her first Boston Marathon for Massachusetts Fallen Heroes. When Hanscom FCU reached out to her this year to join their team, she didn’t hesitate. “I said absolutely. I’ve also always wanted to run for Boston Children’s Hospital. You always hear about the great things they’re doing, so I was really happy to be asked to run for them.”

Skelton, who has been running since she was in high school, was matched up with her Patient Partner, Timmy, who has been part of #TeamHanscomFCU for years. “In all the time that I’ve worked at the credit union, this is the first year I got to meet him,” said Skelton. “He’s such a sweetheart.”
