HANSCOM AFB, Mass.–Hanscom Federal Credit Union collected 2,838 books for the annual children’s book drive sponsored by the Cooperative Credit Union Association (CCUA). The books are distributed by the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless to nonprofit agencies in cities and communities across the commonwealth serving children ranging from babies to teens.
This is the 19thconsecutive year Hanscom FCU is contributing to the CCUA drive. Since 2008, the credit union has collected a total of 38,404 books for the cause through donations from employees, volunteers, and members who’ve dropped books off at select branches.
“Studies show that kids who are read to when they’re young or who read independently when they’re older, do better in school,” said Paul Marotta, Hanscom FCU’s Chairman Emeritus and chairman of the CCUA Social Responsibility Committee. “Our credit union is committed to helping younger generations succeed not just in school, but in life. If we can play a small part in turning a child into an eager reader, that’s something we’re happy to do.”
Separately, volunteers from Hanscom Federal Credit Union prepared a meal for guests at Fisher House Boston, which provides no-charge accommodation for family members caring for hospitalized U.S. veterans. Fisher House Boston is located at the VA Boston Healthcare System, West Roxbury Campus.
“This is a long-standing volunteer commitment for the credit union,” said Marotta. “We enjoy being here at Fisher House to help military family members who are going through trying times. It’s just a small way we can provide assistance… not just to the families, but to the dedicated staff here on campus.”
Hanscom FCU has supported Fisher House Boston since the facility opened in 2010. Mr. Marotta, along with employees and volunteers from Hanscom FCU, come to Fisher House four times a year to prepare meals for the guest families.
