ASHEVILLE, N.C.– SECU Foundation directors, State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) volunteers and staff gathered here for the groundbreaking of SECU Center for MemoryCare. With the support of CU members, SECU Foundation’s Board of Directors approved a $1.8 million challenge grant earlier this year for the 10,000 square foot facility. The new space will allow MemoryCare, a non-profit organization that provides treatment and support for families affected by Alzheimer’s and other cognitive impairments, to expand its clinical care and education programs.
Jim Johnson, SECU Foundation Board Chair, spoke briefly during the groundbreaking event.
“SECU members are pleased to work with MemoryCare to assist with construction funding for the new Center,” he said. “SECU Foundation’s grant will help increase awareness and broaden MemoryCare’s reach to serve a greater number of North Carolinians suffering from memory disorders and provide supportive services for their caregivers. We look forward to the opening of SECU Center for MemoryCare and the meaningful difference it will make in the lives of many families throughout the State.”
MemoryCare provides a unique approach to care, integrating the support and education of caregivers with the specialized treatment of memory impaired persons to help them remain in their homes for as long as possible. Since its beginning in 2000, MemoryCare has served 1,000 patients and 3,000 caregivers from 23 North Carolina counties. SECU Foundation’s grant for the new Center will help the organization double the number of patients and caregivers receiving assistance over the next 10 years.
