ATLANTA – Georgia’s Own Credit Union has teamed with the Atlanta Hawks Foundation and Vision To Learn, a non-profit provider that grants free eye exams and glasses to students in metro Atlanta, to host a special celebration at William M. Boyd Elementary as part of National Reading Month.
As part of the event, nearly 100 students received new eyeglasses, a book of their choice, and a bookmark. Joining them to participate in the celebration and hand out eyeglasses was Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and Hawks Legend Dominique Wilkins, critically acclaimed and southern-bred artist Big K.R.I.T., as well as volunteers from the three organizations.
Each student was called to the stage area in a graduation-style ceremony, where they proceeded to walk across the stage to receive their prescription eyeglasses. After students received their eyeglasses on stage, they also received a book of their choice in celebration of National Reading Month to encourage reading while wearing their new eyeglasses.
“Many of us often overlook the importance of having appropriate eyewear, making the work of Vision to Learn all the more vital,” said Dave Preter, President and CEO of Georgia’s Own Credit Union. “We are honored to partner with the Hawks to support this initiative and ensure that our children have access to essential resources as they grow into the leaders of tomorrow.”
Those in attendance also had the opportunity to take photos with featured members of Hawks Entertainment and special guests including Harry the Hawk, the ATL Hawks Dancers, and 404 Crew. DJ Mo Hawk was also on site to keep the attendees entertained.
