EL PASO, Texas–Showing its commitment to the El Paso community, GECU employees participated in the Credit Union Development Educators Day of Service. GECU’s Day of Service included the grand opening of the food pantry at the Lower Dyer Community Center and the donation of filled bags of food to 100 local families. The GECU Day of Service was held at the Lower Dyer Community Center.
The Credit Union Development Education (CUDE) training provides credit union professionals with lessons in cooperative principals, credit union philosophy, and key development issues that impact communities. As part of the commitment to serving communities, CUDE’s host a Day of Service every June in communities across the world.
GECU CUDE’s donated time and resources to serve the families of the Lower Dyer Community Center with the donations of the 100 bags of food for 100 families and officially opening the food pantry at the community center, in partnership with El Pasoans Fighting Hunger (EPFH). EPFH is a nonprofit organization combating the hunger crisis in our region through the help of community partners to distribute nutritious food to those in need.

“As a CUDE, it’s important to us to transform our training into actionable endeavors that truly benefit our community,” said GECU President and CEO Crystal Long. “As part of our people helping people philosophy, we at GECU decided to expand our support of the Lower Dyer Community Center to serve families in this neighborhood with important resources their families need to thrive. We were eager to open the food pantry and help families in our community, beyond the Day of Service, and we’re so happy we succeeded.”
The grand opening of the Lower Dyer Community Center Food pantry featured a short ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by GECU Development Educators distributing 100 bags of food to families in the neighborhood. Snacks and refreshments were also provided.
