Flying Squirrels, FredNats & VACU Partner to Support Food Banks

RICHMOND, Va.–Virginia Credit Union said it teamed with two minor league baseball teams to donate $12,355 to support local food banks.

Through its “Strikeout Hunger” partnerships with the Fredericksburg Nationals and the Richmond Flying Squirrels, VACU made a $5 donation to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank and Richmond-based Feed More for every strikeout recorded by the pitchers for the FredNats and Flying Squirrels during the course of the season.

“We’re proud to support Feed More and the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank as they work to address the significant and growing need for food assistance in our community,” VACU President/CEO Chris Shockley said in a statement. “VACU is committed to contributing to the health and vitality of our community, and a critical component of that effort is to improve food access.”

VACU donated $5,855 to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, with the FredNats baseball team matching VACU’s $5,855 donation.

Through VACU’s three-year partnership with the FredNats, the two organizations have donated a combined $32,710 to the Fredericksburg-based food bank.

The credit union also donated $6,500 to Feed More, the Richmond-based organization collecting, preparing and distributing food across 29 counties and five cities in Central Virginia. VACU and

Feed More have a longstanding partnership that dates back 23 years. VACU said its financial contributions to Feed More during those two decades, including our “Strikeout Hunger” campaign donations, total more than $133,000.
