GREENBELT, Mich.–Educational Systems FCU is celebrating the importance of developing reading and writing skills through their sponsorship of reading programs with baseball teams and participation in Read Across America.
Throughout March and April, Educational Systems FCU employees are volunteering to visit local elementary schools to read to students. Read Across America celebrates the life and legacy of a famed children's author while showing the importance of reading and literature in our schools.
The credit union also donates a gift basket to each school it visits, which includes a set of Dr. Seuss's books, bookmarks and a $100 Visa gift card to be used for purchasing classroom supplies.
"For us, it's an honor to support education," said Chris Conway, president/CEO of Educational Systems Federal Credit Union. "Reading is the foundation of all learning; we want to encourage students to read and reward those who go above and beyond expectations."
Educational Systems FCU also supports the "Read and Hit a Home Run" Reading Program with the Bowie Baysox and "Pinch onto Books" with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball teams. The credit union held rallies at five elementary schools to celebrate the winners of the preseason poster contest from each county. Isabel Romero, Victor Olatunji, Danijah Shackelford, Emily Steele and Savanna Dugans were the winners in their respective counties. During the season, ESFCU invites students from the counties it serves to participate in the baseball reading programs. Students who read at least four books that are not in the curriculum will receive a ticket to their schools designated baseball game.
