CUs of Rhode Island Support Special Olympics

PROVIDENCE, R.I.–The Credit Unions of Rhode Island recently showcased a $65,000 dollar donation in mid-July to Special Olympics Rhode Island, the largest organization that transforms lives through the joy of sport for people with intellectual disabilities.

Since 1998, the Credit Unions of Rhode Island, members of the Cooperative Credit Union Association (CCUA) have supported their charitable partner and remain one of the largest corporate partners of Special Olympics Rhode Island.

Members of the Social Responsibility Committee presented a check in the amount of $65,000 to Special Olympics Rhode Island Executive Director Dennis DeJesus and athlete Michael Lucca. These funds represented the total amount raised in the year by credit unions, members, sponsors, etc. and brings their 24-year total to more than $1.38 million.

The presentation took place during the annual Credit Unions of Rhode Island Charity Golf Tournament held at Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth, Mass.

Credit Unions of Rhode Island Social Responsibility Committee Chairman David Dupere, from Wave Federal Credit Union, expressed his gratitude to all the credit unions in Rhode Island for their support in the past year during the pandemic and to all the business partners who have stepped up through these times for Special Olympics Rhode Island.

“We are happy to be together again and share these special moments,” he said.

CCUA President/CEO Ronald McLean added, “My thanks to David Dupere and the members of the Social Responsibility Committee for your time and energy in all you do each year for Special Olympics Rhode Island. The commitment that the Credit Unions of Rhode Island share for their charity is remarkable and the difference you make in the athletes’ lives is impressive. Denny and his team make amazing things happen every day for all the athletes of Special Olympics.”

DeJesus noted his heartfelt appreciation to the Rhode Island Social Responsibility Committee, member credit unions and everyone in the room for their efforts throughout the year.

“The past year has been so challenging for our athletes due to COVID. They were unable to be with their friends, compete together, and were isolated from their routines of life,” he said. “But, through the generosity of the credit unions, our athletes were not forgotten as your donation helped us serve our athletes during their toughest challenges through COVID as we found ways to keep them connected and active. We are grateful for all you do.”
