WOODBRIDGE, Va. Belvoir Federal Credit Union’s Director of Human Resources, Karyn Burke, received the Society Human Resources Management Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) designation from the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM).
Serving the Human Resource (HR) profession for more than 65 years, SHRM offers comprehensive resources that enhance the effectiveness of applicants, develops careers, and strategically partners with business leaders and stakeholders. SHRM works to advance the HR profession as a whole, ensuring HR evolves to meet business needs.
The foundation of the educational program available for SHRM-CP is based on the Body of Competency and Knowledge (BoCK), which identifies eight key behavioral competencies and 15 HR functional areas that are critical to the success of any HR professional.
To sit for the exam, applicants must meet specific educational and work experience criteria prior to submitting their application to take either the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP (Senior Certified Professional) exam. After 6 months of self-study with textbooks, online modules, and sample tests, Karyn sat for the 160 question exam, which included scenarios that had multiple correct answers but the best solution based on the given situation needed to be selected.

With a deeper comprehension of HR dynamics and expanded knowledge of how strategy plays into the HR role throughout the organization, Karyn looks forward to incorporating these competences into her career. Karyn stated, “I chose the SHRM-CP credential over other certification programs because it focuses not only on Employment Laws, which are highly important, but incorporates how Human Resources touches the organization as a whole.”
