AmFirst Awards 5 $5,000 Scholarships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.–AmFirst Credit Union  and WBRC FOX6 News partnered to honor 30 high school seniors, awarding five with $5,000 scholarships.

AmFirst began a program to highlight students in 2009, recognizing students who are excelling in their academic, leadership and community involvement. For the fourth year in a row the credit union has partnered with WBRC FOX6 News for 30 weeks to create the Rising Star program where one student each week in Central Alabama area high schools was chosen to receive the honor. Since its inception, AmFirst has awarded $139,000 to local students.

“Again this year, we are proud to recognize 30 outstanding area students through the Rising Star program. These young men and women are already making a difference in their schools, churches, and communities and represent the very best of our future leaders,” said Bill Connor, President/CEO of AmFirst.

“The five scholarship winners represent the best of the best and it’s gratifying to know that the funds we are providing will allow them to continue to pursue their educational goals. We believe the scholarship dollars we award are an investment in our future and we fully intend to continue sponsoring the Rising Star Student program going forward.”

An awards ceremony was hosted at UAB Alumni House, where five of the 30 students won a $5,000 scholarship to go toward a college or university of their choice. At the end of the 30 weeks, each student was interviewed and a panel of judges voted based on certain criteria.
