ACCU Provides Assistance to The Vet Hunters, Fight Against Childhood Cancer

GLENDORA, Calif. --America's Christian Credit Union has provided assistance to The Vet Hunters Project and to the local fight against childhood cancer.

When The Vet Hunters Project hosted an Employment, Education and Resource fair in El Monte, Calif. for U.S. Army and military families, America’s Christian Credit Union (ACCU) hosted a booth to offer financial education and employment advice to local veterans and Army reservists.

Vet Hunters is an advocacy group for homeless veterans dedicated to finding, engaging and supporting homeless veterans, assessing their needs, and cutting quickly through red tape to find housing and to offer other valuable services.

As a means of living out their mission, the Vet Hunters organized the preparation and resume workshops to college education and financial aid counseling.

“I’m honored to partner with a great organization such as Vet Hunters, said ACCU CEO Mendell L. Thompson. “The hard working hours these men and women dedicate to helping homeless veterans are inspiring and appreciated. We were happy to participate and help veterans reach their financial goals!”

Separately, around the world, September was recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In response, America’s Christian Credit Union (ACCU) decided to “Go Gold” to bring support and awareness to the battle against Childhood Cancer. After a week of fundraising, along with a company match, ACCU employees presented a check to Khloe Carlson-Torres in the amount of $600, representing the total funds they and their employer contributed to the cause.

Khloe is a first grader in Glendora who has been battling cancer for the past two years. While going through a recent round of treatment at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), Khloe was given a variety of children’s books, which kept her busy and cheered her up! In the midst of her own fight, she has been working hard to help and encourage children just like her.

Earlier this year, with the support of the Glendora School District, the Glendora Chamber of Commerce, and local businesses, Khloe was able to purchase more than 1,400 books for the children at CHLA. Khloe is now getting ready to kick off her second book drive for CHLA. ACCU was excited to start her off with this contribution! Throughout the week of September 21, ACCU staff contributed funds toward Khloe’s dream of buying books. Also during this campaign, each employee who contributed to the cause sported a gold ribbon in honor of Khloe’s strength and fearlessness.

When presented with the $600 check, Khloe’s mother Kristianna Torres exclaimed ,“Thank you! We greatly appreciate this donation, CHLA is really underfunded on books. Last year we raised enough money to donate 1,400 books. This year, Khloe’s goal is 2,000 books, and ACCU is helping her reach her goal.”
