RALEIGH, N.C.–“Don’t laugh, but I believe credit unions can end poverty.”
That statement is from Maurice Smith, CEO at the $2.66-billion Local Government FCU in Raleigh, N.C., who is also a former chairman of CUNA.
Smith’s comment came during an interview with Susan Mitchell, CEO of Mitchell, Stankovic & Associates and founder of the Underground as part of a discussion about integrating innovation into credit unions.
“We want to do something evolutionary, revolutionary, sustainable and scalable about the poverty that grips households and communities,” said Smith.
