BALTIMORE—Securityplus FCU here is one of the first CUs in the country to test facial recognition biometric software with an ATM.
The move comes as financial institutions across the country test biometrics—fingerprint, iris scans and voice recognition—as an additional layer of security to battle fraudsters.
The CU is employing software developed by Florida-based Real Time Kiosks, planetbiometrics.com reported, on high-tech kiosks, which can be used for most of the transactions that a live teller can perform. The software is now being tested by the $355-million CU and will be rolled out soon.
Members sign on at the ATM with their membership numbers, and then the ATM’s camera takes a picture of the person’s face, keeping the image on file. Facial recognition is then used for all future transactions, although members can also use the kiosk by entering an eight-digit PIN number.
For multiple transactions, the software continually scans the member's face. If a new face appears, the transaction stops, plantbiometrics.com reported.
Facial recognition was pursued after Securityplus determined a fingerprint-based solution was too cumbersome and time consuming for its 30,000 members.
