loanDepot Reports Cyberattack Has Resulted in Shutdown of Some Systems

FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif.–loanDepot, a top 15 mortgage lender in the United States, has confirmed it has been hit by a cyberattack that has taken down its systems.

The company, which did $17 billion in mortgage volume from January-September of 2023 and which had a servicing portfolio of $144 billion as of Sept. 30, said it has retained a cybersecurity firm to conduct an investigation.

“The company shut down certain systems and continues to implement measures to secure its business operations, bring systems back online and respond to the incident,” loanDepot said in an 8k filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

According to several media reports, the document mentions the date of earliest event reported as Jan. 4, 2023.

‘Processing as Expected’

On its servicing website, loanDepot told customers that “recurring automatic payments are processing as expected.” But it also noted there may be a temporary delay in viewing the posted payment in customers’ payment history. It is directing customers to make payments by phone or mail.

“We have taken certain systems offline and are working diligently to restore normal business operations as quickly as possible,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “We are working quickly to understand the extent of the incident and taking steps to minimize its impact.”

Not a First

The attack is not the first time loanDepot has been targeted. The company said in an April 2023 filing with the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office that it had sustained a phishing attack in early August 2022.
