CODY, Wyo.–Sunlight FCU here has had to suspend all of its members’ debit cards after thieves apparently hacked many of its accounts.
The credit union reported that more than 50 members were reporting unauthorized purchases on their cards being made out of state. Much of the illegal activity reportedly took place in Houston. Rather than blocking transactions on those cards or blocking out-of-state purchases, SFCU has cancelled all cards and is reissuing them.
The credit union told local media that the thieves created bogus debit cards and then “got lucky” by managing to insert the numbers of some Sunlight Federal Credit Union’s accounts. The affected cards are all mag stripe.
Another local institution, Pinnacle Bank, also reported problems with debit cards but it is not believed the two incidents are related.
