SHIVELY, Ky. —A woman was shot here while attempting to withdraw cash from a credit union’s ATM. The woman, who works at the University of Louisville Trauma Center, was treated at a hospital and released one day later.
Chelsea Miller, 27, stopped at an ATM Saturday night to get cash before going out for ice cream with her family, according to WLKY.
"We noticed a guy walking and I actually said to my husband, he looks sketchy," Miller said. "A lot of people look sketchy and could just be out minding their own business, so I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt."
Miller told WLKY she was focused on withdrawing money while her husband was paying attention to the surroundings and their seven-year-old son and three-year-old daughter, who were also in the car.
After she pulled up to the machine, her husband yelled at her to keep driving, WLKY reported.
‘I Just Kind of Froze’
"I just kind of froze. I saw the man rushing around the corner, and at this time I didn't see a weapon. So, my first instinct was to start rolling up the window," she said. "As I'm rolling the window up I saw a gun and I saw him start to raise it to the crack of the window that hadn't been raised up yet. That's when I kind of leaned to my right and hit the gas, and as I was doing that, he shot in the car twice.”
According to Shivley police, the shooter had a unique blue gun, which police hope will aid in his capture.
WLKY reported Miller's husband took the driver's seat when they realized she had been shot.
Pouring Out Blood
"I looked down and my chest was pouring out blood and that's when we knew we needed to switch places so that my husband could drive me to the hospital," she said. "I work at University of Louisville Trauma Center so when I see people get shot in the chest it's usually more bad then good. There's so many vital organs there, so I didn't think I was going to make it. I was really scared the whole drive there.”
The bullet didn't hit any of Miller's vital organs. She was released from the hospital the day after the shooting. While she was in the hospital, detectives noticed a bullet went through the trunk of her car, police said, hitting the car seat her daughter was sitting in.
The little girl was not hurt.
