With Skimmer Attacks Hitting Community, DVFCU Donates Skimmer Locator Device to Police

RIDGECREST, Calif.–After numerous skimmer attacks in this community, Desert Valleys FCU has donated a “BlueSleuth” Bluetooth Skimmer Locator to the Ridgecrest Police Department.

The locator is a handheld receiver dedicated to detecting and track hidden and illegal Bluetooth card skimmers and other rogue Bluetooth and BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) devices. These wireless devices include card skimmers hidden inside ATM, gas pump, and vending machines, the credit union said.

Desert Valleys FCU reported that since September 2018 the Ridgecrest community has been under “continuous attack by groups of skimmers which have placed devices on local ATM’s and gas pumps. Many devices have been discovered and removed but the financial losses to the community are estimated at over $300,000,” the credit union reported.

‘Appreciative of Support’

In March 2019, Desert Valleys assisted in the arrest of Edward Tone, who was allegedly found in possession of several skimming devices, DVFCU said.

“Our officers have diligently worked with us to protect citizens from these types of crimes” said Desert Valleys CEO Eric Bruen. “We felt the best way to repay them was to give them another tool in the battle against skimming.”

Added RPD Capt. Justin Dampier, “The Ridgecrest Police Department is appreciative of the support and tools provided by Desert Valley FCU. Strong support by community partners such as Desert Valley FCU enables us to more efficiently deter this type of fraudulent activity and help us catch and hold the person(s) responsible for their crimes.”
