With Gas Taxes On Rise in N.J., One CU Helps Motorists

TOM’S RIVER, N.J.–For the second time this week, one credit union here is helping consumers deal with this state’s increased gas taxes by giving away free gas.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, First Financial FCU will be giving free gas starting at 6 a.m. to the first 50 New Jersey motorists at the Shell station at 1350 U.S. 9, here. Each car will receive $25 in free gas.

In the wake of New Jersey’s 23-cent gas tax hike, First Financial Federal Credit Union said it is bringing relief at the pump totaling $1,250 in free gas. The credit union has already held similar giveaways in Howell, N.J., and Neptune, N.J., this week.

The free gas promotion comes just weeks after New Jersey had its first raise in its gas tax in nearly 30 years. On Nov. 1, New Jersey went from having the nation’s second lowest gas tax at 14.5 cents per gallon to the seventh highest at 37.5 cents per gallon. The added funds are expected to raise an estimated $16 billion over the next eight years to fund improvements to roads, bridges and mass transit.

“Our community will have to adjust to paying more at the pump, and this crossover comes on the cusp of the very busy, travel-filled holiday season,” said Issa Stephan, president/CEO of First Financial. “It doesn’t matter if you were for or against the tax hike. To be a part of this community is a wonderful thing and we’ve just chosen this as a way of giving back.”

In addition to the gas giveaway, anyone who refinances their auto loan, or purchases a new or preowned car financed with First Financial, will receive a $25 Wawa gas card at loan closing. This gas card promotion runs through Dec. 31 or while supplies last.
