With Debt Ceiling Debate Now Over, NAFCU Says It’s Watching Some ‘Overarching’ Themes in Congress

WASHINGTON–With the drama surrounding the federal debt ceiling now behind Congress and with a deal in place through the end of 2024, Congress is again turning its attention to other issues, including several “overarching” themes NAFCU said it will be watching.

Brad Thaler

One of the things getting attention, according to NAFCU VP-Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler, will be the appropriations bills that have “kind of been on hold as they worked through the debt deal.”

“We expect increased focus on those over the next few weeks before we get to the end of the fiscal year at the end of September,” Thaler said. “There are not really a lot of session weeks left before then and Congress has got a lot to tackle.
In addition, Thaler noted House Republicans have said they want to move everything to regular order.

Thaler said the trade group is again watching the National Defense authorization Act (NDAA), which has annually become the source of a tug-of-war between credit unions and banks over language that would give bank equal lease treatment for on-base financial facilities that is currently limited to credit unions. That legislation, given its must-pass status, has also become a vehicle for other unrelated bills, and credit unions have expressed concerns it could be used to carry the Credit Card Competition Act, which is opposed by CUs by strongly supported by retailers.
