ARLINGTON, Va. –With Congress back for a short session before it breaks again for its August recess, NAFCU is not expecting much in the way of change from its schedule and priorities prior to its most recent break.
NAFCU EVP and General Counsel Carrie Hunt said the trade group will be keeping a particular eye on how Congress addresses mortgages and other loan forbearance-related issues, with the hope lawmakers will provide as much flexibility as possible for as long as possible.
“As COVID spikes, things have gotten more politicized and, of course, it’s an election year, and that makes things politicized,” Hunt said, noting NAFCU will look to remain particularly engaged in the National Defense Authorization Act and language related to CU lease access on military bases and on expanded forgiveness of PPP loans.
She added NAFCU also remains on the lookout for all the “well-intentioned” measures in Congress, such as efforts to make changes to overdraft programs or to expand interchange caps to also include credit.
Congressional Caucus
Meanwhile, as CUToday.info reported here, NAFCU has rescheduled its annual Congressional Caucus for this year and made it a virtual event, and that includes its annual Hill visits, Hunt said. She said NAFCU expects the virtual event to be every bit as good as the in-person event.
“It will be very similar to our regular Caucus, with a robust schedule,” said Hunt, noting among the keynoters will be former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
NAFCU will also be assisting in setting up virtual Hill visits for its members over a two-week period, rather than the three days of the in-person event.
“We’re really excited,” said Hunt. “It’s a golden opportunity to get involved ahead of the elections.”
The meeting will be held virtually Sept. 14-15.
