WASHINGTON–With the threat of government funding again looming over Washington—with one senator objecting to what she said would be federal funding over crack pipes—Congress nevertheless has a number of hearings on its agenda of interest to credit unions.
Hearings credit unions will be watching include:
Today
- Senate Committee on Banking, Housing & Urban Affairs Full Committee hearing: Examining the President’s Working Group on Financial Markets Report on Stablecoins. (This hearing is the Senate version of a similar hearing held in the House last week.)
- The Senate Banking Committee’s Executive Committee is also scheduled to vote on and advance the president’s nominations for governors of the Federal Reserve.
Wednesday
- U.S. House Committee on Financial Services Virtual Hearing: An Unprecedented Investment for Historic Results: How Federal Support for MDIs and CDFIs Have Launched a New Era of Disadvantaged Communities
Thursday
- Senate Committee on Banking, Housing & Urban Affairs Full Committee hearing, “The State of the American Economy: A Year of Unprecedented Economic Growth and Future Plans

The Senate is in session this week, while the House is out and scheduled for committee work.
In the Senate there will also be action on a postal reform bill passed by the House, as there are some technical issues related to amendments, according to Jason Stverak, deputy chief advocacy officer, with CUNA.
Then there is the overarching and reoccurring issue, with funding for the federal government again set to run out on Friday. Complicating matters is a statement from Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) who said she will not support any funding measures if there is money for a new anti-drug campaign that includes crack pipes as part of “safe smoking” kits.
Blackburn and several other Republicans have also raised issues around other items that are part of the program.
The White House has responded by saying the “safe smoking kit may contain alcohol swabs, lip balm, other materials to promote hygiene and reduce the transmission of diseases like HIV and hepatitis.”
Should the government shut down, Stverak said during a call with the media that “credit unions will again step up and service members, as they have when this has happened in the past.”
