With April Marking Financial Literacy and Youth Month, CUNA Sends Reminder to Congress on CU Activities

WASHINGTON—With April being Financial Literacy Month and Credit Union Youth Month, CUNA has sent a letter to all 535 members of Congress about the work being done by CUs in financial well-being.

Jason Stverak

“America’s credit unions do not need a month marked on the calendar to work with their members to promote financial literacy.  Afterall, financial literacy is just one component of someone's overall financial well-being,” wrote CUNA Deputy Chief Advocacy Officer for Federal Government Affairs Jason Stverak. “Credit unions provide access to high-quality financial services and financial education for members to meet their needs. Our members know they can count on their credit union to help them fulfill their financial dreams.”

Stverak also encouraged members of Congress to visit a credit union headquarters or branch in their district or state during the current and upcoming recesses, and to visit AdvancingCommunity.com to see examples of how credit unions are meeting member needs.

Activities Highlighted

Stverak also highlighted some of the credit union Financial Literacy Month activities from around the country that include:

  • Credit unions across New Mexico will visit over 100 local classrooms April 18 to support financial literacy by reading “A Chair for My Mother/Una Sillon Para Mi Mama” by Vera B. Williams in English and Spanish, with all books donated by the Credit Union Foundation of New Mexico
  • Multiple credit unions in Minnesota operate branches out of high schools, with students serving as paid tellers, learning both important financial skills as well as a pathway to a future career
  • The Maine Credit Union League was instrumental in encouraging state lawmakers to vote in support of Resolution SP 555, designating April as Financial Capability Month. Since 2004, the Maine Credit Union League has hosted Financial Fitness fairs at local schools, correctional facilities, and community centers for more than 70,000 residents
