With 2 Big Bills to Finish Before Heading Home, CUs Warily Watching Congress

ARLINGTON, Va.–Congress has several important issues it is looking to accomplish before taking its Christmas recess, with credit unions paying particular attention to ensuring they aren’t swept up  into two of the biggest items on the to-do list.

Brad Thaler

As CUToday.info reported earlier, among the big-ticket bills is the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which has become an annual tug-of-war between credit unions and the banking industry. The banking lobby continues to work to have language inserted that would give banks equal access to military bases as is currently enjoyed by credit unions. Such a provision has been strongly opposed by credit unions, and such language has ultimately been removed from the NDAA during negotiations over a final bill in years past.

“We'll be watching for any issues that could try to ride on the NDAA,” said NAFCU VP-Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler.

Other Big Bill

Thaler noted the other big, must-pass legislation getting scrutiny is the supplemental appropriations measure before Congress that deals with funding from everything from funding for Israel, Ukraine, the U.S./Mexico border and a number of other items that remain in negotiations.

“The Senate is going to start the process to move that forward and that kind of is operating somewhat in tandem with the NDAA,” explained Thaler.
