WINNIPEG, Manitoba—Numerous credit union member accounts have apparently been drained by a card-skimming scam, including a local politician whose tweet is credited with bringing it to public attention.
According to authorities, the extent and scope of the fraud has not yet been determined, but numerous financial institutions have been hit by the fraud. At least two CU members told local media that their accounts had been drained at ATMs located in New York. Manitoba’s credit unions issued a statement assuring account-holders that any missing funds will be reimbursed.
Among those affected has been Erin Selby, a former TV personality who is now a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. In her tweet, Selby said, "My entire bank account has been drained from an ATM in N.Y. Apparently a problem with Canadian credit unions. Check yours today!"
Cambrian Credit Union is one institution that has confirmed the breach, indicating that card skimming is believed to be reason for the problem. It has 60,000 members and in a statement said it would be reissuing cards.
