Why Products, Services For Immigrants Will Remain Relevant

WASHINGTON–Credit unions will want to continue to offer programs and services for immigrants and new citizens, with the Pew Research Center releasing a new study showing one-fifth of the world’s immigrant populations lives in the U.S.

The study reveals that more than 40-million people currently residing in the U.S. were born in another country, making America the most immigrant populated nation in the world.  Many of these immigrants have green cards or U.S. citizenship, WorkPermit.com reported. A number of credit unions nationally have responded with programs such as citizenship loans, among other efforts.

Those foreign-born nationals residing in the U.S. hit a record 43.2 million in 2015.

“Ever since U.S. immigration laws replaced a national quota system in 1965, the immigrant population living in America has more than quadrupled,” the study stated.

The study identified that 13.4% of today’s U.S. population, which is nearly three times the amount in 1970 (4.7%), is made up of foreign-born nationals. The Pew Research Center has estimated that the number of immigrants living in the U.S. will exceed 78 million by 2065, WorkPermit.com noted.

Pew’s study forecast that in 2065, 38% percent of all immigrants in the U.S. will be of Asian descent, while 31% of the foreign-born population will be Hispanic, 20% will be white and blacks will account for 9%.
