Where CUs Should Target Kids Still Living At Home

WASHINGTON–Which credit unions should consider promotions and financial education aimed at adult kids still living at home? The Census Bureau has some suggestions.

According to new Census data, New Jersey has the highest% age of 18-34-year-olds living with their parents at 47%. But the Garden State is hardly alone with a high percentage of what are sometimes called “boomerang” kids. The Census data shows that more than 40% of people in that age cohort in Connecticut and New York also report living with their parents. California and Florida also show a high percentage of adult kids rooming with mom and dad.

Nationally, just more than one-third of adults under 35 are living in their parents’ home, the Census Bureau reported. The data was gathered as part of the American Community Survey and does not break out whether those living at home skew to the younger end of the 18-34-year-old range.

And which state has the lowest percentage of adult kids at home? North Dakota.
